Killing of Tahir Naseem

Cale Brown, Deputy Spokesperson We are shocked, saddened, and outraged that American citizen Tahir Naseem was killed yesterday inside a Pakistani courtroom.  Mr. Naseem had been lured to Pakistan from his home in Illinois by individuals who then used Pakistan’s blasphemy laws to entrap him.  The U.S. Government has been providing consular assistance to Mr. Naseem and his family since his detention in 2018 and has called the attention of senior Pakistani officials to his case to prevent the type of shameful tragedy that eventually occurred.  We grieve with the family of Mr. Naseem. We urge Pakistan to immediately reform its often abused blasphemy laws and its court system, which  allow such abuses to occur, and to ensure that the suspect is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Iran Vows Response to US Harassment of Passenger Plane over Syria

Image
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the adventurist and dangerous move by US jet fighters against Mahan Air’s Beirut-bound passenger plane, saying Tehran will not leave any hostile move unanswered. In a statement on Friday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said the dangerous move, for which the CENTCOM terrorist organization's spokesperson claimed responsibility, is a violation of international aviation law and a disruption of regional peace and security. He also described as ridiculous CENTCOM spokesperson's claim that the American warplanes were conducting a "standard visual inspection" of the Mahan Air passenger plane at a safe distance during their "routine air mission" near Syria's al-Tanf airbase, saying the move comprised a series of violations. "Both the presence of US troops in Syria and the air missions of their warplanes were illegal. More importantly, no one has allowed the United States ...

Erdogan’s private police force: a new blow to Turkish democracy

Image
The new strengthened neighborhood watchmen can further monitor and suppress Erdogan's political opponents under the pretext of public security and combating crimes. Turkish parliament  passed a controversial bill  in the past weeks providing the neighborhood watchmen ( Bekci  in Turkish) with extended yet unprecedented powers, including the authority to stop and search citizens, and to carry firearms and use force whenever necessary. With the introduction of the new law, the neighborhood watchmen will have almost the same powers as the police. The new legislation elicited immediate  backlash from the civil and political opposition  in Turkey, accusing the incumbent Justice and Development Party (AKP) of attempting to establish a paramilitary force loyal to the president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Night watchmen or  Bekcis  have been a longstanding part of the policing structure in Turkey. Assigned to the neighborhood police station, the watchmen w...

In Oman, no security for the migrant health workers fighting the pandemic

Image
Oman, like other Gulf states, has used migrant workers to achieve its development goals but has consistently failed to give back. Al Hayat International Hospital, Situated in Al Ghubra, Muscat, Oman  |  On the 50th anniversary of Sultan Qabus coming to power in a palace coup d’etat - an event often seen as the founding of the  modern Omani state  - we consider the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Oman from the perspective of ‘human security’ for Omani citizens and first and second generation foreign migrants. The  broadening of the agenda of security studies in the 1990s  moved beyond an almost exclusive state-centred concern to encompass the concept of ‘human security’. In this conceptualization the referent object of security - what or who is being threatened - was widened from the state to embrace human communities and their security from threat, including  threats to health  - a prime one being a  pandemic disease . Egypt: no country for all women

Recent events in Egypt show how the country’s mistreatment of women is part of a system that uses violence against women to protect its inequalities. Three major events that took place recently shed a light on the position of women in Egypt. Though they might seem like disconnected incidents, they help complete a picture. The first is  the case  of Ahmed Bassam Zaki, the son of an elite family, accused of sexual assault with over a hundred stories supporting these accusations and attesting to his behavior. His accusers are from the American University in Cairo (AUC) and the American International School (AIS). However, the recent measures taken by Egypt’s public prosecutor in the case of Zaki should not be celebrated too soon as a triumph for women’s rights but rather they might be simply a public relations tactic at a time when women are facing growing levels of violence. The second event is the wave of  arrests  that have been happening since April 2020 wi...
