Opinion: What Really Are Shashi Tharoor's 'Options'?

Senior Congress Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor is quite the darling of the middle classes. He is charming, well spoken, erudite, a skilled debator and has a felicity with the English language that he uses to great effect by throwing around lengthy, utterly unpronounceable words that no-one understands. Yet, despite his widely acknowledged talents, or maybe because of them, Tharoor stands at a crossroads in his political career today, unsure of which route to take in case he reaches a dead-end with no way to get back. The Ruling Trio His party's ruling clique in his home state of Kerala, the trio of powerful AICC general secretary and Rahul Gandhi confidante K.C. Venugopal, leader of opposition in the legislative assembly V.D. Satheeshan, and man for all seasons Ramesh Chennithala, is unwilling to cede space in state politics to him. At the national level, Rahul Gandhi's obsession with caste leaves little room for English-speaking elites as he scouts for OBCs, Dalits and tribal...

Forty-six workers of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were rescued from the debris of an avalanche that hit Uttarakhand's Chamoli on Friday, while nine are yet to be retrieved. Four of the workers are critical. All rescued workers are undergoing treatment at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) camp in Mana. Over 65 personnel plowed through almost seven feet of snow overnight in the area between Mana village and Mana Pass, near the Indo-Tibetan border, even as snow storms and poor visibility hampered rescued operations. The urgency to rescue the remaining workers increased as the state's Meteorological Department issued a rain and snowfall alert in Chamoli district. Chances of light rain have also been predicted in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Pauri, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital and Champawat. According to a list released by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, the trapped labourers are from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himac...

Opinion: Look Beyond Russia-Ukraine Or Gaza, 'Smaller' Wars Are Reshaping The World

A glance at recent history is always insightful in the study of geopolitics and geosecurity. Let's rewind to 1990—a pivotal year on the global stage. At the time, I had just returned with the last elements of the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) from Sri Lanka and was headed to an Army cantonment in a 'peace' location. However, our plans quickly changed when we were diverted to Punjab. We were to form the frontline of forces crossing the River Sutlej to counter Pakistan's intransigence—its launch of Exercise Zarb-e-Momin and its sponsorship of militancy and terror in Punjab. Zarb-e-Momin, a military training manoeuvre with operational intent, was designed to send a message and divert our attention. Meanwhile, conflict was also brewing in Kashmir, setting the stage for a broader geopolitical confrontation. The Story Of Al Qaeda It was the end of the Cold War. The Berlin Wall had just fallen, and the Soviets were still withdrawing from Afghanistan. Punjab was in turmoil...

6 Days And Counting: Teams Intensify Rescue Efforts At Telangana Tunnel

Image
A breakthrough has proven elusive even as rescue operations at the partially collapsed Telangana's Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel entered the sixth day on Thursday. Eight workers have been trapped in the tunnel since February 22 and a state minister had said on Wednesday that the rescue operations would be completed in two days.  Several teams, from the Army, Navy, National Disaster Response Force and the rat miners who rescued the labourers trapped at the collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi in 2023 are at the site and work has begun on cutting parts of the Tunnel Boring Machine and other obstacles that have prevented rescuers from accessing the portion of the structure where the workers are trapped.  Nagarkurnool Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Gaikwad said the damaged part of the conveyor belt in the tunnel is expected to be repaired during the day on Thursday to ensure that debris can be transported out.  "Yes, it's already (gas cutting machines ha...

AAP Says Punjabi Dropped From List Of Subjects For Class 10, CBSE Responds

The Punjab government on Wednesday announced that it has made Punjabi a mandatory subject in all schools across the state, alleging it was removed from the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) list of regional language subjects for Class 10. The CBSE , however, refuted the claims and said the subject would continue to be offered. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains accused the BJP-led Centre and the CBSE of dropping Punjabi from the list of subjects for Class 10 in the new draft norms for the biannual board exam format, called it a "well-planned conspiracy" against Punjab and Punjabi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said his department has issued a fresh notification stating that Punjabi will be a main subject in Class 10 in the state. If Punjabi is not a main subject in any school, then the certificate will be considered "null and void", he said, adding that this will apply to all education boards in the state. "A Failed State Surviving On Handouts": India Slams Pakistan at UN

India on Thursday launched a scathing critique of Pakistan at the seventh meeting of the 58th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), describing the country as a "failed state" that relies on international aid to survive. India's Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, Kshitij Tyagi, accused the Pakistani leadership of perpetuating falsehoods dictated by its military. Mr Tyagi's comments came in response to Pakistani law minister Azam Nazeer Tarar's allegations of human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.   "It is regrettable to see Pakistan's leaders and delegates continuing to spread falsehoods handed down by its military terrorist complex. Pakistan is making a mockery of the OIC by abusing it as its mouthpiece. It is unfortunate that this Council's time continues to be wasted by a failed state which thrives on instability and survives on international handouts. Its rhetoric reeks of hypocrisy, its actions of inhumanity and ...

"Congressman By Birth": DK Shivakumar On Reports Of 'Closeness' With BJP

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday termed as rumours the reports suggesting that he is getting close to the BJP, saying that there are no such developments. When asked about the Maha Kumbh Mela, however, Mr Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief, deviated from his party's stand to praise the organisation of the Maha Kumbh. Addressing a press conference at his residence here, Mr Shivakumar stated: "I am making it very clear. I could see in media and social media, some of my friends are calling after seeing reports that Shivakumar is getting closer to the BJP. By birth, I am a Congressman, my stand is I am a Hindu, and I believe in every culture of society. Besides my personal belief, the Congress ideology is to take everyone together." "People are planting stories. Sadhguru of the Isha Foundation came to my residence and invited me to Shivratri. He is from Mysuru and I admire him for his knowledge. An army vehicle came under fire from suspected terrorists in a forward village near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Wednesday, officials said. There were no immediate reports of any casualties in the brief firing near Phal village in Sunderbani sector, they said. The terrorists, believed to be hiding in a forest, fired a few rounds at the army vehicle passing through the area -- considered a traditional infiltration route for militants. The troops returned fire while reinforcements were rushed to neutralise the terrorists, the officials said. The army launched a cordon and search operation in the area. Read full article

8 Trapped In Telangana Tunnel For 72 Hours, Excavation Halts Due To Slush

Efforts to rescue eight people trapped in a collapsed section of a tunnel in Telangana's Nagarkurnool district entered day four on Tuesday, with experts temporarily halting heavy excavation due to an increase in the amount of slush and mud at the accident site. Teams of experts that had gone into the tunnel yesterday have said the slush wall has now increased by about a metre. They believe that there could be structural stability issues if intensive excavation is undertaken, which could not only further endanger the trapped workers but also risk the lives of the rescue teams. Chris Cooper , an Australian tunnel expert, on Monday also said the entire area appears unsettled and that it might be too dangerous to continue with heavy-duty digging. About 3,200 litres of water is also flooding the tunnel every minute, mixing with the vast quantities of sand, rock, and debris to make more mud and slush. It, however, is not a cause of concern as the tunnel is being de-watered. The res...

"Very, Very, Remote": Telangana Minister On Survival Chances Of 8 Trapped Men

The chances of survival of the eight persons who remain trapped in the SLBC tunnel after a partial collapse two days ago are "very remote," though every effort is being made to reach them, Telangana Minister Jupally Krishna Rao said on Monday. He also mentioned that a team of rat miners, who had rescued the construction workers trapped in the Silkyara Bend-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand in 2023, has joined the rescue teams to extricate the men. The Minister stated that rescuing the trapped individuals would take at least three to four days, as the accident site is filled with muck and debris, making it a daunting task for the rescuers. "To be honest, the chances of their survival are very, very, very, very remote. Because, I myself went up to the end, almost just 50 meters short (of the mishap site). When we took photographs, the end (of the tunnel) was visible. And out of the 9 meter diameter (of the tunnel)--almost 30 feet, out of that 30 feet, mud has piled up up to ...

Liquor Ban In J&K? Signature Campaign, Posters, Spark Massive Row

Jammu and Kashmir is seeing a fresh political row over liquor ban - an issue that came up in 2016 but got thumbs downed by Mehbooba Mufti's ruling People's Democratic Party. Now the battlelines have been re-drawn, with the PDP spearheading the demand for a ban. The party has started a signature campaign in support of the ban and it is the ruling National Conference that is accusing it of hypocrisy. Over the weekend, posters came up across Srinagar, supporting the ban and calling upon tourists to "respect local culture and traditions". Police action to remove the posters has been questioned by the Opposition. The matter is expected to dominate the assembly in the budget session which begins on March 3. Two members - one of the PDP and one from the National Conference -- have submitted bills to ban liquor. PDP's Fayaz Ahamd Mir, National Conference's Ahsan Pardesi and a third MLA -- Awami Ittehad Party's (AIP) Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad - have moved separate ...
