Srinagar Shivers At Minus 5.2 Degrees As Severe Cold Grips Kashmir

Kashmir ushered in the New Year on a dry note even as the cold wave intensified in the valley with the minimum temperature plunging two to three degrees further below the freezing point, officials said on Monday. There has been no snowfall in most plain areas of Kashmir while the upper reaches of the valley have also received lesser than usual amount of snow by the end of December. The open skies have resulted in the minimum temperature sliding further in most parts, including Srinagar, the officials said. The minimum temperature dropped in the summer capital of Srinagar to minus 5.2 degrees Celsius from the previous night's minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, they said. Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.7 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night's minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, they said. In no respite from the bone-chilling winter, the people in Delhi-NCR woke up to yet another morning of cold wave on the last day of the year with thick layer of fog all over the national capital and adjoining areas. The minimum temperature at the Safdarjung Observatory, the city's primary weather station, was recorded at 11 degrees Celsius. The dense fog enveloped the city, reducing visibility. Uttarakhand Civil Code Bill To Be Tabled In Assembly Soon: Chief Minister

The Uniform Civil Code will soon be implemented in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has said. 55 Foreign Terrorists Among 76 Killed In J&K In 2023: Top Cop

A total of 76 terrorists, including 55 foreigners, were killed, 291 terrorist associates arrested and 201 overground workers booked under the Public Safety Act in Jammu and Kashmir this year, Director General of Police R R Swain said on Saturday. Swain further said that only 31 local terrorists – an all-time low - are left in the Union Territory. He said 14 civilians were also killed by terrorists in 2023, and there was a decline of 63 per cent in terror-related incidents as compared to the last year, while recruitment of terrorists has also gone down with strike calls and stone-pelting on continuous decline. J&K Court Sentences Three To Life In 2009 Murder Case

A court in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district Thursday sentenced three persons to life imprisonment in a 2009 murder case. The Court of Additional Sessions Judge in Handwara also awarded punishment to six others. The court pronounced the judgment in case FIR No. 128/2009 under relevant sections of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) for murdering a person in 2009. Life imprisonment was awarded to three accused persons -- Bashir Ahmad Mir, Habibullah Mir, and Manzoor Beigh, all residents of Wadder Bala Handwara in the north Kashmir district for the commission of the offences punishable under Section 302. They were also convicted with imprisonment for a period of three years each for the commission of offence with Section 148 RPC read with Section 149 of the J&K State Ranbir Penal Code, along with fine of Rs 10,000 each. "Stakeholders May Seek Review Of Article 370 Judgment": CPM Leader

CPM leader MY Tarigami on Thursday said various stakeholders are contemplating moving the Supreme Court with a review petition over its December 11 judgment that upheld the Centre's August 2019 decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution, which bestowed a special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. A review petition must be filed within 30 days from the judgment or order and placed before the same bench that had delivered the decision. After an eight-year fight for his life, Lt Colonel Karanbir Singh Natt from the Territorial Army (TA), died on Sunday. Lt Col KBS Natt, a Sena medal winner, had been in a coma since 2015, when he was hit by a bullet in the face during an operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara. The PAFF is a front of the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). It was first seen after special status to Jammu and Kashmir was scrapped in August 2019. Most of the terror attacks on security forces and civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in recent times have been claimed by the PAFF. The PAFF is known to use body cameras to film their attacks. The terror group then uses the films for propaganda. In April this year, the PAFF attacked an army truck in Poonch and filmed it. Twenty-one people, seven of them married couples, were arrested and many others were booked on Tuesday in a major police action against those harbouring Rohingya migrants or facilitating their stay with illegal papers in Jammu, an officer said. The arrests were made from Kishtwar, Ramban, Poonch and Rajouri districts, while 10 Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals were booked in Doda, the officer said.
