"No One Can Claim...": Haryana's Nayab Saini On Suspense Over His Seat

A day after Haryana BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli floated his name as a candidate from Ladwa for the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday said it is the BJP's "parliamentary board" which decides who contests from where. "I am the MLA from Karnal...BJP parliamentary board will decide from where I have to contest. No one, no matter how big, can claim he will fight from a particular seat. I am a chief minister, even I cannot claim from where I will fight," Mr Saini told reporters here. The Chief Minister made the remark responding to reporters' query on Mr Badoli's Friday announcement. On Friday, Mr Saini during his roadshow in Karnal was asked by reporters who the party's candidate from Karnal would be, to which he responded, "I will contest the election from Karnal also, why are you worried?" Asked if he would file nominations from two seats, Mr Saini evaded a direct reply. "I will fight the ...

"Good Thing, But...": Omar Abdullah On Banned Group Members Fighting Polls

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Friday said it is a "good thing" that Jamaat-e-Islami leaders are participating in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir elections but fired a salvo at the banned group. While welcoming their participation into active politics, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir said that they would have to explain to the people of the union territory "why so much blood was in their hands". "It's a good thing they are participating. Everyone should participate but the question would be asked why the region suffered for almost 30-40 years and what was achieved by their actions," Omar Abdullah told NDTV in an exclusive interview. The National Conference never backed out from participating in elections or being part of the democratic process, he said. "We suffered because we always spoke about having a relationship with India we never spoke that the issue of Jammu and Kashmir is beyond the Indian constitution. We b...

Had To Sacrifice Many Seats For Alliance With Congress: Omar Abdullah

National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah Friday said the pre-poll alliance with the Congress for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls was not an easy decision as the party had to "sacrifice" many seats it felt it had a chance to win. Addressing a party function at the NC headquarters Nawa-i-Subah, Mr Abdullah said the struggle for the "restoration of the rights" of the people of Jammu and Kashmir is a collective fight. "This is not only our fight, but of the whole Jammu and Kashmir. If we have to undo the wrongs done to us, it will not only benefit us, but every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir. We are fighting this battle collectively for Jammu and Kashmir. "That is why we joined hands with the Congress, even as it was not an easy decision for us, (because) we had to sacrifice those seats where we knew only the NC can give a tough fight," the NC vice president said. However, he said the alliance with the Congress was necessary to defeat ...

Opinion: Now That Champai Soren Is Finally With BJP, Can He Help It Win?

Image
The former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Champai Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today, ending days of speculation. 'Tiger', as Soren is fondly called, is a strong tribal leader with a credible image. He is considered the right-hand man of JMM patriarch Shibu Soren and played a big role in the movement to carve out a separate state of Jharkhand from Bihar.  With Soren's entry, the BJP hopes to make a dent in the ST vote bank of the INDIA bloc, comprising the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). It also boosts the BJP's chances of making a comeback in the state by exploiting the anti-incumbency against the Hemant Soren government amidst allegations of unfulfilled promises.  BJP's Need For A Stalwart Leader Champai was appointed as Chief Minister after Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in February 2024. Barkati through his highly surcharged vitriolic speeches against India incited youth to pick up arms and resort to violence. He is presently in jail along with his wife in connection with a money laundering case connected to terror funding. His daughter had filed his nomination papers before the district electoral officer for the Zainpora Assembly seat in the Shopian district on Tuesday. Won't Contest J&K Elections, Says Mehbooba Mufti, Explains Reason

People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti has said she would not contest in the coming assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir, since given the current situation, it is not possible to implement her party's agenda even if she becomes the Chief Minister. Instead, her daughter, Iltija Mufti, will be making her electoral debut this time. "I have been Chief Minister of a government with the BJP which revoked FIRs against 12,000 persons (in 2016). Can we do that now?" news agency Press Trust of India quoted him as saying. "As the Chief Minister of a government with (PM) Modi, I wrote a letter to separatists to invite them for talks. Can you do that today? I got a ceasefire (implemented) on ground. Can you do that today? If you cannot take back an FIR as Chief Minister, what does one do with such a post?" news agency Press Trust of India quoted him as saying. Asked about National Conference chief Omar Abdullah's change of heart about contesting the asse...

US Diplomats' Kashmir Visit "Within Boundaries Of Diplomatic Reach": Sources

Jammu And Kashmir Polls: Congress Announces 1st List Of 9 Candidates

The Congress on Monday issued its first list of nine candidates for the three-phase assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, fielding party general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir from Dooru and former state unit chief Vikar Rasool Wani from Banihal. The announcement came after the Congress clinched a seat-sharing deal with ally National Conference (NC). The NC and the Congress agreed to contest 51 and 32 seats respectively for the assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir. One seat each has been allotted to the CPI(M) and the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), the allies announced at a joint press conference at NC president Farooq Abdullah's residence in Srinagar after day-long negotiations. "Embarrassment": Omar Abdullah's Jibe At BJP Over Seat-Sharing Fumble

National Conference chief Omar Abdullah, shortly after thrashing out what he called a "tough" seat-sharing deal with ally Congress, said he was surprised that the BJP, which prides itself on its discipline, failed to announce its candidates without a hitch.  "For them to have furniture broken in their office and almost a riot like situation was extremely unusual. But then, I'm not surprised. When you suddenly change all your senior leaders, you are going to have a problem," Mr Abdullah said. The BJP had released a list of 44 candidates for the three-phase election to 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir, but deleted it and released a list with 15 names -- the candidates for the first phase.  The change followed a massive display of resentment from the local leaders. The list which was deleted, contained names of leaders who had switched over from the Congress, National Conference, PDP and Panthers Party.  "When you reward turncoats, you reward those w...

Congress Rushes 2 Leaders To J&K Amid Seat Dispute With National Conference

With the clock ticking on finalising candidates for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election, Congress has rushed troubleshooters to Srinagar to clear the roadblocks in its seat-sharing talks with National Conference. The last date for filing nominations for first phase of the polls is tomorrow. Senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal and Salman Khurshid will be meeting National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and his son and party vice-president Omar Abdullah today to iron out differences. Earlier, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met the Abdullahs and the two sides reached on agreement on contesting the elections together. But differences over seat-sharing emerged and the negotiations have hit a roadblock. The Congress has now rushed Mr Venugopal and Mr Khurshid to put an end to the impasse so that the parties can focus on prepping for the key election. Ninety seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly are voting in three phase...

"If Congress Ready To Accept Our Agenda, Will Support Them": Mehbooba Mufti

Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said that her party is willing to support a Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir elections, provided they are ready to accept the PDP's agenda. "The people of Jammu and Kashmir have given an answer to the BJP government from the Lok Sabha polls that there are issues in Jammu and Kasmir and by removing Article 370, it has become more complicated...Whenever we allied with any party we had a motive, an agenda---what we have to do...That's why I said that if they (Congress) are ready to accept our agenda, we are ready to support them," Mehbooba Mufti told reporters. Earlier, on August 24, Mehbooba Mufti remarked that for her, the upcoming assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir is not about statehood or seat sharing but a "bigger goal." During a press conference to launch the PDP manifesto for the upcoming assembly polls, Mehbooba Mufti said, "For me, this elec...

PM, Amit Shah At Party Panel Meet To Decide On J&K Poll Candidates

The BJP is hoping to win 66 of the 90 seats in the legislative assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, sources told NDTV after a meeting of its Central Election Committee on Sunday. The committee had met to finalise the party's candidates for the coming assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir -- which is taking place after a decade. The final list of candidates is expected on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief JP Nadda were joined by other CEC members, including Home Minister Amit Shah, as they discussed the matter with party leaders from the Union Territory. Last week, the local leaders had held a long meeting with Mr Nadda and Mr Shah, among others, to narrow down the list of probables. The meet also included a strategy session. Like last time, the BJP is going into polls without any strong local pre-poll alliance. But sources said the party will extend support to regional parties and Independent candidates in the assembly polls, which will begin in September and will be he...

"U In UPS Stands For...": Mallikarjun Kharge Jabs Centre On Pension Move

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge today took a swipe at the Narendra Modi government over what he called was a "government of U-turns", a day after the Centre announced its approval of the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). The UPS provides an assured pension, minimum pension, and assured family pension. Mr Kharge said the 'U' in UPS stands for "Modi government's U-turns." "Post June 4, the power of the people has prevailed over the arrogance of power of the Prime Minister. Rollback in the budget regarding long-term capital gain/indexation, sending Waqf Bill to joint parliamentary committee, rollback of broadcast bill, rollback of lateral entry," Mr Kharge said in a post on X. "We will keep ensuring accountability and protect 140 crore Indians from this despotic government," the Congress chief said. The 'U' in UPS stands for Modi Govt's U turns! Post June 4, the power of the people has prevailed over the arrogance of po...

We have a bigger goal... We are fighting for dignity, for the resolution." She further said that alliance and seat sharing "are faraway things" and stated that if the National Conference and Congress are ready to adopt her agenda, then she will support them because for her, "solving the problem of Kashmir is more important than anything else." She further criticised the alliance between Congress and the National Conference, stating that the alliance is formed not on agenda but seat-sharing. "When we allied earlier, we had an agenda;...

Article 370 Has No Place In J&K, Will Never Be Restored: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday asserted that Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, will never be restored. Amit Shah's comments came as Jammu and Kashmir's two principal regional parties -- the National Conference and the PDP -- promised in their election manifestoes for upcoming assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir that they would work to restore the controversial provision, scrapped on August 5, 2019. "Article 370 has no place in Jammu and Kashmir now or ever. It will never be restored," Amit Shah said at a press conference in the Chhattisgarh capital when asked about it. The home minister was addressing a press conference here after attending a meeting of top civil and security officials of the Naxal-hit states. Restoration of Article 370 and Jammu and Kashmir's statehood as well as implementation of the autonomy resolution passed by the erstwhile assembly in 2000 are among the National Conference's 1...

Mehbooba Mufti's PDP Releases Manifesto, Kashmiri Pandits In Focus

Ahead of the J-K assembly elections, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) released its manifesto on Saturday, which mentions efforts to restore Articles 370 and 35A, launch diplomatic initiatives between India and Pakistan and ensure dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley. According to the manifesto, the PDP "is resolute in its pursuit of restoring the constitutional guarantees that were unjustly scrapped and is committed to restoring Jammu & Kashmir to its original status, ensuring that the voices of its people are heard and their rights are safeguarded." "The unconstitutional and illegal revocation of Articles 370 and 35A in 2019 has further complicated the Kashmir issue, deepening the alienation felt by the people of the region. The PDP is resolute in its pursuit of restoring the constitutional guarantees that were unjustly scrapped, and is committed to restoring Jammu & Kashmir to its original status, ensuring that the voices of its people ar...

Blog: From Bhang Chutney To Olan, Indian Food Was Never Inherently Unhealthy

Image
While having a bout of the stomach flu, I sat last weekend in my bed waiting for my piping hot  khichdi  for lunch. As I took my first bite, I realised what an absolutely brilliant dish it is. Rice and legumes cooked together to make a healthy, satiating meal that your gut loves. There's a reason every Indian doctor prescribes it with your dose of antibiotics when your stomach is upset. I've realised that Indian food, at its heart, and contrary to popular perception, is extremely healthy and delicious. It's not all oil and spices, as today's most popular Indian fare would like you to believe. So while I nursed my bad stomach, I decided to do some research and call up a few friends from around India asking them about their favourite comfort foods that are also considered extremely healthy in their regions. Thalipeeth From Maharashtra A savoury multigrain flatbread made of sorghum (jowar), wheat, pearl millet (bajra) and rice, along with roasted legumes (bengal gram...

Video: Ready, Charge Set, Breach! Indian, Lankan Soldiers' In Combat Drill

Image
The sound of gunshots echoed as two soldiers - a buddy pair - stood next to the wall of 'Fancy House'. A soldier puts his hand on the shoulder of his 'buddy', a sign to tell him that I have your back. The duo put explosives while a third soldier guards them. Dust billows after the blast and the 'buddy pair' breach 'Fancy House'. This urban combat situation was staged at the ongoing India and Sri Lanka joint army exercise 'Mitra Shakti'. The exercise began on August 12 and will end on Sunday, August 25. The 'buddy pair' moves to the next target, as seen in the video. Later a Sri Lankan Air Force Bell 212 helicopter approaches the combat site to take the troops and the "insurgent" captured during the missions. Such scenarios are vital to enhancing Fighting in Built-up Areas (FIBUA) where an area dense with buildings and structures will entail lethal urban warfare, posing severe challenges for the ground troops and armoured units....

"Does Congress Support...": Amit Shah's 10-Point Attack Over J&K Election

Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday fired 10 questions at the Congress after the party said it had all but agreed an alliance with the National Conference for next month's Jammu and Kashmir election . In a post on X Mr Shah raged that the Congress - which "played with the unity and security of the country in its greed for power" in the past - had "once again put itself before the country". He also questioned the Congress over promises made by the National Conference in its manifesto, including a promise to encourage dialogue between with Pakistan and restoration of the J&K flag. Of course, the red flag, as far as the BJP was concerned, was the National Conference saying it would "strive to restore 370 - 35A (referring to Article 370 and Article 35A, which guaranteed special status to J&K and special rights to 'permanent residents' of J&K) and statehood as prior to August 2019". The 10 questions for the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, ...

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to take stock of the party's preparations for the upcoming assembly polls in the Union Territory and explore a likely alliance with the National Conference. The Congress leaders received a rousing welcome upon their arrival here with party activists and supporters lining up outside the airport. The enthusiastic supporters even stopped Gandhi's vehicle on the airport road, causing some anxious moments for the security personnel escorting him. The two leaders are visiting the UT for key meetings in connection with the three-phased assembly elections beginning September 18, a senior Congress leader said. There were no official meetings scheduled for the two leaders for Wednesday, he said.
