Rahul Gandhi On T-Shirt Question: "Will Make Video On How To Handle Cold"

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday tackled the "T-shirt" controversy that appears to have taken the centrestage after he marched into Delhi borders on December 24 leading his Bharat Jodo Yatra with just a white T-shirt and trousers amid severe cold condition. Speaking to the media, the Congress MP gave an amusing response when quizzed on his winter woolen choices as the national capital saw mercury hover between 7 and 4 degrees Celsius over the past week. In a light-hearted conversation with reporters, the Wayanad MP said that he is thinking of making a video on "how to tackle winter in a T-shirt" once the Yatra concludes. #WATCH | Why is there so much disturbance because of the T-shirt? I do not wear a sweater because I am not scared of winter. 56 Terrorists From Pak Among 186 Killed In 2022: Jammu And Kashmir Top Cop

A total of 186 terrorists, including 56 Pakistani nationals, were killed and 159 arrested in 2022 which proved to be the most successful in recent years, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Dilbagh Singh said on Saturday. He also said the police and other security agencies are moving in the right direction to achieve "zero terror" activities in the Union territory. At the year-end press conference here, the police chief said 146 Pakistan-created terror modules, comprising four to five members each who were tasked to carry out selective and targeted killings and grenade and IED attacks, were also busted in 2022. He said 100 young people joined terrorism in J-K this year, which is also the lowest in many years. A majority of them were eliminated, while security forces are working to bring down the number of active terrorists to a two-digit figure which is presently a little more than 100.  (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and i...

"Basic Rights Have Become...": Mehbooba Mufti Writes To Chief Justice

Basic rights in the country have now become “luxuries" and "entitlements” bestowed upon only those who toe the government's line on political, social and religious matters, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said on Saturday. In a letter to Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, she also alleged that the trust deficit and growing alienation has only widened in Jammu and Kashmir since the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019. “I write to you with a deep sense of concern and worry about the prevailing situation in the country especially J-K. Your recent observations on the inability of lower judiciary to grant bail in ordinary cases in a functioning democracy as ours should have been adopted as a directive rather than just being consigned to a single column story churned out in newspapers,” Ms Mufti said in the letter posted on her Twitter handle. Speaking at the inauguration of the Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy on Friday, CJI Chandrachud had said that...

"Consider Them (BJP) My Guru, They Are Showing Me...": Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said he considers the Bharatiya Janata Party as his "guru" (teacher) as the BJP shows him a roadmap and teaches him "what should never be done". Addressing a press conference, the Wayanad MP said, "I want them (BJP) to attack us aggressively, this will help Congress party understand its ideology. I consider them (BJP) as my Guru, they are showing me the way and training me on what is not to be done." While talking about the Bharat Jodo Yatra which entered New Delhi on December 24 before taking a nine-day break, he said, "When I started this, I just took it as an ordinary yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. Slowly we understood that this yatra has a voice & feelings." "The doors of Bharat Jodo Yatra are open for everyone, we are not going to stop anyone from joining us. Akhilesh ji, Mayawati ji and others want "Mohabbat ka Hindustan"," he said in an open invite to the other parties...

Rush Of Devotees At Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Ahead Of New Year

The Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu witnessed a huge rush of devotees on Saturday as serpentine queues were seen on the Trikota hills of Katra despite the severe cold conditions ahead of New Year. Devotees hailing from different regions of the country, including children, were seen chanting "Jai Mata Di" as they made their way up and down the hill, wishing each other the best ahead of the new year. "I am getting a good feeling. I come here on the eve of every new year. I have been coming here for 5-6 years to pray to Mata Devi. I am feeling good," said Manish Kumar, a devotee from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, who was seen chanting "Jai Mata Di". "Wonder Why...": Ghulam Nabi Azad On Reports Of Return To Congress

Senior politician and chief of the newly-formed Democratic Progressive Azad Party Ghulam Nabi Azad today said there was no move to return to Congress with which he had snapped his 52-year-old association earlier this year. Talking to PTI, the veteran politician who has been former Union minister and chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, said reports suggesting his return to the grand old party are planted by some vested leaders in the Congress and there was no truth in them. "I have never spoken to any Congress leader and neither has anyone called me. So I wonder why these kinds of stories are planted in the media," Mr Azad said. Mr Azad said these attempts were made by the Congress leaders to create a sense of uncertainty within his party cadres and to demoralise them. "Come whatever may, we will emerge stronger," he said. Mr Azad, who has served as leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, said "I have not indulged in any mudslinging with anyone. Whatever I ha...

"Rahul Gandhi Didn't Follow Protocol": Delhi Police On Congress Allegation

A day after central paramilitary force CRPF hit back at Congress on its allegation of security breaches in Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo yatra', the Delhi police has also said the Congress MP himself did not follow the security protocol, and that there were complete security arrangements. Delhi Police submitted its report to the Home Ministry. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal had earlier written to Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that the security of the Yatra was compromised on multiple occasions following its entry into Delhi on Saturday. The Home Ministry had then sought a report from the Delhi Police. All units -- security, traffic, and special branch of Delhi Police -- have submitted their reports. Delhi Police had also deployed many policemen in plain uniform, and made a security cordon for Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi was himself seen breaking the cordon, police have alleged. The CRPF, in its rebuttal yesterday, had also said that Mr Gandhi broke security ...

"Rahul Gandhi Has Violated Protocol 113 Times": Central Force Hits Back

Rahul Gandhi broke security protocol on several occasions during the Delhi leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra, central paramilitary force CRPF has said in its rebuttal to the Congress charge of breaches in its leader's security during the December 24 march. The central force's response came a day after Congress general secretary KC Venugopal wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that Delhi Police had completely failed to ensure Mr Gandhi's security as the Yatra passed through the capital. The party sought proper security for the leader, who enjoys Z+ cover, when the Yatra enters the sensitive zones of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The CRPF has said in its rebuttal that security arrangements for Mr Gandhi are made by the CRPF in coordination with state police and other agencies. The force said that an Advance Security Liaison for the December 24 event was held two days earlier. An Advance Security Liaison refers to a meeting of security agencies to plan a VIP's securi...

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that he would prefer to settle down in life with a partner who has a mix of qualities of both his mother Sonia Gandhi and grandmother Indira Gandhi.  In an interview on a YouTube channel during the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', he termed his grandmother and former prime minister Indira Gandhi as "the love of my life and my second mother". Asked whether he would settle down with a woman like her, Mr Gandhi said, "That is an interesting question... I would prefer a woman... I do not mind... she has got qualities. But, a mix between my mother's and grandmother's qualities is good."  The former Congress chief, who is on a padayatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, also talked about his love for driving motorcycles and cycles and referred to a Chinese electric company that manufactures bicycles and mountain bikes with electric motors. After 4 Terrorists Killed In Jammu, Experts Demand Scanners For Vehicles

With yet another incident of terrorists trying to sneak into Kashmir by hiding in a truck, security experts have batted strongly for the installation of vehicle scanners along the highways. Four heavily-armed terrorists, travelling in a truck to Kashmir after infiltrating from Pakistan, were killed in a "chance encounter" with security forces here early Wednesday morning, a police officer said. The gunfight took place around 7.30 am amid dense fog near Tawi Bridge in the Sidhra bypass area along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway It is a "major challenge" for security forces which have foiled over a dozen such bids on national highways in Jammu and Kashmir by eliminating several terrorists and recovering large quantities of weapons and explosive material during the past few years. "There is a long pending demand of security forces to install full body vehicle scanners along the highway," security expert and retired army officer Brig Anil Gupta told PTI...

"Can't Regulate Airfare, But...": Minister's Plans As Air Travel Surges

The government has no intention to regulate airfares, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told NDTV, adding that the “market has to play itself out”. He did, however, dish out numbers to underline that aviation is growing in India, which means airlines and customers both stand to gain in the “volume game”. “After 20 years, we have a new entrant (Akasa Air) in a sector known for companies that shut shop,” he stressed. He was speaking to NDTV in a week in which India yet again broke its record of daily fliers, crossing 4.3 million on December 24. “The (aviation) sector is heralded for new growth… growth that's going to be permanent,” he said. He cited two factors behind a 15 per cent growth this year when compared to 2019, the year immediately before the Covid pandemic — one, “the desire” of people to travel; two, the growth “in terms of airlines increasing fleet size and the number of airports increasing”. From 74 airports in 2013-14, the number has gone up to 146, he ...

On Rahul Gandhi's Yatra To End In Kashmir, Minister's "Disturbance" Jibe

Image
Does Rahul Gandhi want to vitiate the atmosphere in Kashmir, Union minister Anurag Thakur asked on Wednesday about the Congress' plans to unfurl the tricolour in the Valley and stressed that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved significantly under the Modi government. An estimated 1.6 crore tourists have visited Jammu and Kashmir in one year, which is a record in itself, the minister told reporters. “Now tourists can visit every corner of Jammu and Kashmir. This shows that the situation has improved in Jammu and Kashmir. There are no stone pelting incidents. Does Rahul Gandhi want to go there to spoil the atmosphere?” he said. “Today, anyone can unfurl the tricolour in any part of Jammu and Kashmir because the Narendra Modi government has ended Article 370 and Article 35A in J&K,” he added. Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started in Kanyakumari in September, is scheduled to end in Kashmir next month. Thakur reminded him of the Ekta Yatra undertaken in 1...

Relief From Extreme Cold Expected For Delhi, But It Won't Last Long

Delhi residents may get some relief from chills tomorrow onwards as a western disturbance counters cold wave conditions, the weather department has said. Visibility on the national capital's roads improved marginally this morning as fog thinned. The cold, however, persisted as the city recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold day conditions are likely to abate over northwest India from Wednesday and then return from December 31. According to IMD weather scientist RK Jenamani, a fresh cold wave may batter Delhi on December 31 and January 1. "Dense to very dense fog will continue to prevail in the belt. There will be an improvement on Dec 29 because of a western disturbance that will bring fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Leh and Himachal Pradesh. There will be drizzle in north Punjab on Dec 29," he added. The weather scientist said there will be significant improvement in the cold wave cond...
