The defence minister said several schemes that could never have been imagined earlier were introduced by the PM. "But what is happening with our Congress Party people? Their one leader, and that neta ji, wherever he goes, says there is a 'nafrat ka bazaar' (market of hate) there, and he has come there to open a 'mohabbat ki dukan' (shop of love)." Singh did not name Gandhi but was taking a dig at him over the phrase used by the opposition leader. Particularly during his "Bharat Jodo Yatra", Gandhi accused the ruling BJP of spreading hatred. He said he...

Explained: The Math For PM's Uniform Civil Code Push And AAP's Role

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's latest pitch for a Uniform Civil Code for all Indians has sparked speculation that the BJP will try to push through a legislation to implement this with an eye on the 2024 general election. On PM's Uniform Civil Code Push P Chidambaram's Sharp Retort

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Congress leader P Chidambaram said it cannot be forced on people by an "agenda-driven majoritarian government" as it will "widen divisions" among people. The former Union minister claimed the Prime Minister was batting for UCC to divert people's attention from issues of unemployment, price rise and hate crimes. He also alleged the BJP was using UCC to polarise the society. "The Hon'ble PM is making it appear that UCC is a simple exercise. He should read the report of the last Law Commission that pointed out it was not feasible at this time "The nation is divided today owing to the words and deeds of the BJP. A UCC imposed on the people will only widen the divisions," Mr Chidambaram said. Noting that a Uniform Civil Code is an aspiration, the senior Congress leader said, "It cannot be forced on the people by an agenda-driven majoritarian governm...

In an exclusive interview, he told PTI that special laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the National Security Act operate in different fields and do not cover the offence of sedition and therefore, the specific law on sedition needed to be there too. Justice Awasthi asserted that while considering the usage of the law on sedition the panel found that "the present situation right from Kashmir to Kerala and Punjab to the ...

The grand old party has repeatedly stressed the big meeting wasn't the appropriate forum for that issue. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal said his party was committed to not expanding to other states in the interest of larger opposition unity. Congress should announce their decision on Delhi Ordinance in the meeting itself, they, however, demanded.
