Several judges from the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of the High Court of J-K and Ladakh, Justice Tashi Rabstan, and ex-Supreme Court judge and Director of National Judicial Academy, Justice Anirudhha Bose, attended the conference, among other legal representatives from the region. Woman 'Bullies' Kashmiri Shawl Sellers In Himachal, Case Filed

A panchayat official caught on camera warning two shawl sellers from Kashmir against trading their wares in Himachal Pradesh was booked for "promoting disharmony" and "insulting religious sentiments", officials said. A showcause notice has also been issued to the panchayat samiti member seeking an explanation on her conduct in 15 days, they said. The 2.46-minute video that surfaced on social media showed the woman telling the two Kashmiris not to come to the village and asking them to say "Jai Shri Ram" to prove they are "Hindustani." The woman later apologised in another video. "I accept my mistake and apologise if I intentionally or unintentionally said something wrong," she said in the second video. The apology video was shared by the national convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association Nasir Khuehami who had claimed that the matter had been resolved after the apology. A case under Section 299 (insulting religious beli...

Immigration Emerging Security Challenge: Amit Shah Amid Bangladesh Unrest

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said security agencies should focus on emerging security challenges along the eastern border, immigration and trends in urban policing. Inaugurating the annual DGPs/IGPs conference here, which will discuss a host of emerging national security challenges, including counter-terrorism and left-wing extremism, Mr Shah also congratulated the police leadership for the smooth conduct of the 2024 general elections and the seamless rollout of the three new criminal laws. The focus should be on emerging security challenges along the eastern border, immigration and trends in urban policing, Mr Shah was quoted as saying in an official release. The home minister's statement bears significance as India's eastern neighbour Bangladesh has seen unrest following the ouster of its then prime minister Sheikh Hasina and an interim administration taking charge in August. There have been reports of attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, an is...

2 Jammu And Kashmir Government Employees Sacked For Alleged Terror Links

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday terminated two government employees from service for their alleged terror links, officials said. The fired employees have been identified as Abdul Rehman Naika who worked as a pharmacist in the health department, and Zahir Abbas, a teacher in the school education department, they added. Mr Sinha invoked Article 311 (2) (c) of the Constitution to terminate the two employees after a probe by the law enforcement and intelligence agencies "clearly established their terror links", officials said. The LG has ordered termination of several government employees over the past few years under the same provision. Naika, a resident of Devsar in Kulgam district, was appointed as a medical assistant in 1992. "His links with Hizbul Mujahideen was unearthed after the police launched a probe into the killing of Ghulam Hassan Lone, a staunch nationalist in Devsar whose three sons are serving in security forces. "Lone w...

Court Order On Ajmer Dargah Sparks Intense Political Debate

An Ajmer court's decision to hear a petition claiming the presence of a Shiva temple under the Ajmer dargah, has sparked intense political debate, coming as it does after similar claims over mosques and dargahs in Mathura, Varanasi and Dhar. Amid intense criticism of Opposition leaders -- who pointed out that days ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a chador to the Ajmer dargah -- leaders of the BJP have claimed a decision to check out the presence of temples under such disputed structures is fair.  "A court has ordered survey in Ajmer. What is the problem if court has ordered a survey?" said Union minister Giriraj Singh. "This is a truth that when Mughals came to India, they demolished our temples. The Congress government has only done appeasement till now. If (Jawaharlal) Nehru would have stopped it in 1947 itself, there would have been no need to approach the court today," he added. At the heart of the argument is a law made in 1991, that maintains ...

Tushar Mehta, Solicitor General of India (SGI), told the Supreme Court on Thursday that a fully functional court with video conferencing facilities exists in Tihar jail for the trial of JKLF leader, Yasin Malik. The submission by the SGI came after the top court on November 21 suggested that the possibility of a makeshift courtroom in Tihar Jail for conducting the trial of Yasin Malik should be explored. Yasin Malik is being tried for two cases related to abduction and murder. Tushar Mehta on Thursday informed the bench of Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih that a fully functional court exists in the jail with all the facilities of video conferencing if required and in the past proceedings have taken place there. Tushar Mehta also apprised the top court that it has filed two fresh applications, one for the modification and the other for the transfer of the matter. The Supreme Court issued notice to the respondents on the applications and also made the other co...

"Congress's Overconfidence Cost Us": Team Thackeray On Maharashtra Rout

The Congress's "overconfidence" in Maharashtra and its "attitude" during seat-sharing talks hurt Maha Vikas Aghadi's prospects, a senior leader of Shiv Sena (UBT) has said a week after the Opposition bloc was routed in the state polls. The BJP-led Mahayuti scored a thumping victory in the election, winning 230 seats in the 288-member Assembly. Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi should have projected Uddhav Thackeray as its Chief Minister face. "After the Lok Sabha election results, the Congress was overconfident in Maharashtra like in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. This was reflected in the results. Its attitude during seat-sharing negotiations hurt us. Uddhav ji should have been projected as the Chief Minister face. Not doing so harmed our prospects. The results would have been different if this was done," Mr Danve told the media. In a subtle dig at the Congress, he said, ...

Congress Posts Worst Show In Maharashtra, Distant Junior Partner In Jharkhand

The Congress continued its losing spree on Saturday posting its worst-ever show in Maharashtra and ending up as a distant junior partner to the ruling JMM in Jharkhand, with further diminishing role in the opposition bloc as other allies perform better. While the INDIA bloc's victory in Jharkhand was some consolation, losing a big state like Maharashtra after the upset in Haryana is likely to weaken the grand old party's broad bargaining power in this era of coalition politics. The poor show of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra extinguished hopes of getting Rajya Sabha seats from the state in future. On the other hand, the NDA with its stupendous victory is set to get a majority in the Upper House in the next cycle of biennial elections. Despite being the dominant party of the opposition MVA in Maharashtra, the Congress failed to pull the weight of the opposition bloc and stood decimated in the face of an NDA tsunami. The Congress which contested the highest number of...

Waqf Law Has No Place In The Constitution, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hailed the BJP-led alliance's sweeping victory in Maharashtra as popular endorsement of its governance model and rejection of the Congress' "lies and deceit", as he accused the Gandhi family of spreading the "poison of casteism and divisiveness". Buoyed by the NDA's unprecedented scale of win in the politically prized state, PM Modi flayed the Congress for "betraying" the Constitution's secular principals and cited the Waqf Act, which his government is seeking to amend, as an example of its "appeasement politics". The Congress has tried to inflict capital punishment on true secularism, he claimed, asserting that the Waqf law has no place in the Constitution. Reiterating his call for "ek hain to safe hain" (we are safe if united), he said this is the biggest message from Maharashtra after the Haryana polls and it has become the country's "mahamantra". It is becomi...

NDA Sets The Pace In Maharashtra, Opens Massive Lead Over MVA

The ruling Mahayuti alliance has opened a commanding lead in very early trends as counting began Saturday morning for the Maharashtra Assembly election . The Mahayuti - fronted by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party factions led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar - was ahead in 47 seats within 30 minutes. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi - the Congress and the Sena and NCP groups led by Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar - was ahead in nine. A reminder. These are postal ballots and the trends could change quickly, as it did in Haryana last month, when the Congress claimed an early lead but lost that to the BJP as the day progressed. The MVA had only been given a (very) slim chance of upsetting the in-power BJP-led alliance's applecart in the final election of the year; only one of 11 exit polls studied by NDTV believed it can win. Three others were on the fence but even they tilted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party. Voting for this...

Counting of votes for the Maharashtra Assembly election - a straight fight between the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi - begins at 8 am, with a majority of the 11 exit polls studied by NDTV leaning heavily towards the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance. The MVA - fronted by the Congress and the Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar - has been given a (very) slim chance of upsetting the BJP's applecart in the final major election of the year; only one exit poll believes it can win. Three others are on the fence, although one has tilted towards the MVA and the other the Mahayuti, which includes the Sena and NCP groups led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Voting for the Maharashtra Assembly's 288 seats was held Wednesday in single phase. The majority mark is 145, and an average of the 11 exit polls gives the Mahayuti 155 seats. The MVA is expected to get 120 seats and smaller parties and independent ...

Approximately 5,000 veterans participated in a grand event in Poonch on Friday to mark the 77th anniversary of the historic military link-up of Poonch, a border district in Jammu and Kashmir, with the rest of the country, according to a release. The Poonch Link-Up Day is a significant event in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, commemorating the Indian Army's successful conclusion of a grueling 15-month siege of Poonch on this day in 1948 under the leadership of the revered Brigadier Pritam Singh. Despite enduring hunger, disease, and relentless assaults by the Pakistani Army, the unwavering spirit of the people of Poonch and the Indian Army triumphed. On this occasion, Lieutenant General Navin Sachdeva, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding, 16 Corps, reflected on the shared legacy, stating, "Today, we come together to honour the courage, resilience, and unbreakable bond that the Awam and Indian Army have shared over the past 77 years." Mahayuti vs Opposition On "Fraud" Exit Polls As Maharashtra Awaits Result

Voting for the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election may be over - the single-phase poll was held Wednesday - but verbal jousting betwixt the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi rumbles on, with each hotly disputing last night's exit polls and proclaiming grand wins for their parties. Five of nine exit polls studied by NDTV indicate the Mahayuti will ease to victory. Three believe neither side will gain a clear advantage. And only one exit pollster gives the MVA an outright win. But a health warning: exit polls often get it wrong, as they did in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir; in the former the Congress was declared the winner, while the Congress-National Conference alliance was favoured in the latter. As it turned out, the BJP won Haryana and the NC (on its own) swept J&K . "Even Ajmal Kasab Got Fair Trial": Supreme Court In Yasin Malik Case

Even 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab got a fair trial in this country, the Supreme Court said today as it heard the CBI's challenge to a Jammu court order asking separatist leader Yasin Malik to appear in person. The matter relates to the killing of four Indian Air Force personnel on the outskirts of Srinagar in 1990 and the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, then Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's daughter. Yasin Malik is the main accused in both cases. Malik is serving a life-term in Delhi's Tihar jail in a terror funding case. In 2022, a court hearing Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act cases asked Malik to appear in person. Malik has also said he wants to appear in person. The CBI has challenged the Jammu court order, saying that Malik's physical appearance may disrupt the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir and witnesses against him may be endangered. Appearing for the central agency, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench of Justice AS Oka and...

To Address Debt, Court Asks Himachal To Shut Down 18 State-Run Hotels

The Congress government in Himachal Pradesh is battling massive debt and to help it clear its unpaid dues, the Himachal Pradesh High Court today ordered the shutting down of 18 state-owned loss-making hotels, which the judges said were "white elephants". The court had also ordered the attachment of Himachal Bhavan, the state guest house in New Delhi, earlier this week. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has said they will challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. But there is no update on how the state plans to manage to pay back its debts and manage its expenses. State Advocate General Anup Kumar Rattan called the order "routine", but said it became news since the court mentioned the possibility of auctioning the property. "This order of the High Court has come in an execution petition in which Seli Hydropower has filed," he said, pointing out that the upfront premium of Rs 64 crore has not been deposited in the appellate court by the government....
