Tired Of Waiting, UP Villagers Building 108-Ft Bridge With Crowdfunding

They waited, waited, waited and then decided not to wait anymore. A group of villagers in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district, tired of waiting for local representatives to fulfill their promises to get a bridge built, have taken matters into their own hands. An 108-ft bridge, paid for by the villagers, is now coming up on the Magai river. The villagers have been pooling money to arrange the required funds of nearly Rs 1 crore. They said they have repeatedly raised their demand for the bridge, but have only received promises. The foundation stone for the bridge was laid in February last year and work is now in full swing. Administrative questions, however, remain. The bridge is being constructed without the administration's permission and in that case, a big question is how accountability would be fixed if there is an accident later. Local resident Rajesh Singh Yadav, who has worked with the village headman, said the bridge's construction is halfway done. "From Indepen...

Mohanlal's 'Empuraan' Sparks Fresh Congress-BJP Row In Poll-Bound Kerala

Kerala 's ruling Left front and the main opposition, the Congress, have united to celebrate actor Mohanlal's new movie, ' L2: Empuraan ', which they say "exposes the Sangh agenda". The movie - the second part of the planned 'Lucifer' trilogy and which refers, indirectly, to the 2002 Gujarat riots and examines the misuse of central investigative agencies - premiered Thursday, and grossed Rs 22 crore in one day, the most ever by any Malayalam film in the state. But, away from the theatres, there was opening day drama after right-wing groups targeted the movie, with one calling it "anti-Hindu" and another "an overt Hindu-bashing propaganda film". However, the Left and Congress, unlikely allies, pushed back, praising the portrayal of "villainous" right-wing politics. The Congress' Kerala youth unit chief and the Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil praised ' Empuraan ' as a "pan-Indian film" and said the h...

S Jaishankar Highlights UN's Blunder On Kashmir, Calls For New World Order

The injustice done by the West at the UN over Kashmir was highlighted at The Raisina Dialogue - a global multilateral conference held in New Delhi each year. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar did not mince his words as he showed how the United Nations had faltered in its understanding and approach to the issue. Mr Jaishankar noted that the "longest-standing" illegal occupation of a territory globally after World War II has been experienced by India - in Kashmir. The enitre state of Jammu and Kashmir, which includes Gilgit and Baltistan, called Northern Areas before 1970, had acceded to India in 1947. Pakistan, in a unilateral act of aggression, invaded Jammu and Kashmir and has been illegally occupying parts of the Indian Union since then. Speaking about Kashmir at the forum today, Mr Jaishankar highlighted the selective approach and application of global rules on issues pertaining to sovereignty and territorial integrity. As he raised concerns over historical injusti...
