Army Thanks J&K Poonch Residents For Support Amid Alleged Torture Row

The army today said the involvement of a few locals from Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch, who are accused of helping terrorists in a recent attack, is "unbelievable. A defence spokesman praised the role of people in the region for always fighting "shoulder to shoulder with the army irrespective of their caste and religion". The statement comes a day after a video surfaced in which a man appealed people to support the army before he died by suicide. Mukhtar Hussain Shah had alleged harassment and torture by the police during his questioning in connection with the investigation into a terrorist attack in Poonch last week. "In the recent attack on an army truck, a few names of some in the community have come to the fore, which is unbelievable. Hence, people of this area should keep away from such type of activities in future," the spokesman said. Watch: Massive Landslide Near Banihal, Srinagar-Jammu Highway Shut

A massive landslide blocked the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in Banihal district, the second to be caught on camera in two days. Videos show loose mud cascading off the hillside onto the road below. The crucial highway has since been closed, hours after traffic had been restored. Another landslide on the same highway in Ramban district last night had swept away a portion of the road and left two injured. The two were rushed to hospital yesterday after debris from the landslide crashed onto their truck carrying poultry. Traffic was then restored through the recently built bridge at Shabanbass in Banihal. Earlier this year, multiple landslides left hundreds stranded on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which acts as a critical link between the Valley and the rest of the country. Construction of a four-lane highway to provide all-weather connectivity to Kashmir is underway, however, haphazard use of bulldozers in several areas to carve a road along the mountains has loosened the...

Last week, five Indian soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch. "Even Pakistan Will Know Who Real Shiv Sena Is But...": Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said seeing the support he is getting from people, even Pakistan will tell whom the real Shiv Sena belongs to, but the Election Commission (EC) cannot do so as it is "suffering from cataract". He also said that his party and supporters would ensure that "traitors" would be politically finished, a reference to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his supporting MLAs, whose rebellion led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in June 2022. In a big blow to the Thackeray-led faction, the Election Commission earlier this year allotted the 'Shiv Sena' name and its poll symbol 'bow and arrow' to the group led by CM Shinde. Addressing a mammoth rally of his party at Pachora in Jalgaon district of north Maharashtra, Thackeray thanked his supporters for coming to the public meeting in large numbers even if he had nothing to offer after he lost the party name and symbol to the rebel group. ...
