Army Personnel Shoots Himself Dead With Service Rifle In Jammu And Kashmir

An army jawan on Monday allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, officials said. S Surendra shot himself while on duty at an army camp in Baramulla town in north Kashmir, they said, adding that he died due to the gunshot injuries. This is the second such incident in the last two days. A police constable shot himself with his service rifle in Rajbagh area of the city on Sunday night. People Questioned, Call Records Examined As Search For Missing Soldier Continues

The Jammu and Kashmir Police questioned a dozen of persons and examined the call details of army jawan Javaid Ahmad Wani who went missing a couple of days ago from his native Kulgam district while on leave, officials said on Monday. The soldier, posted in the Ladakh region, was supposed to join work on Sunday. His car was found abandoned at Paranhall. A dozen of people have been questioned and the call records are being examined as the search operation to locate the missing soldier continues, officials said. Over 13 Lakh Girls, Women Went Missing Between 2019-2021 In India: Data

More than 13.13 lakh girls and women went missing in the country in three years between 2019 and 2021 and most of them were from Madhya Pradesh, followed by West Bengal. According to the Union Home Ministry data, tabled in Parliament last week, 10,61,648 women above 18 years and 2,51,430 girls below that age went missing between 2019 and 2021 across the country. The data was compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). In Madhya Pradesh, 1,60,180 women and 38,234 girls went missing between 2019 and 2021, according to the data provided to Parliament. A total of 1,56,905 women and 36,606 girls went missing from West Bengal in the same period. In Maharashtra, 1,78,400 women and 13,033 girls went missing in the said period. In Odisha, 70,222 women and 16,649 girls went missing in the three years while 49,116 women and 10,817 girls went missing from Chhattisgarh in the said period. Terrain, Weather Challenges Push Zojila Tunnel Deadline To 2030

Difficult terrain and weather challenges have pushed the deadline for completion of the Zojila tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir valley and the Ladakh region, to December 2030, according to officials. The tunnel, said to be the longest of its kind in Asia and at the highest altitude, will significantly cut down the time to cross the Zojila pass from four hours to just 15 minutes, they said. Officials said that while 40 per cent of work on the 13-km-long tunnel is already over, the challenges posed by the terrain and weather are such that the rest of the work is taking so much time. "The area is severely avalanche-prone. The work had to be stopped multiple times due to the difficulties posed by the weather and the terrain. The tunnel was to be completed by December 2026. Kashmir Soldier Back Home On Leave Goes Missing, Massive Search On

An Armyman has gone missing in south Kashmir's Kulgam district. Rifleman Javed Ahmad was on leave and had come home a few days back. He went out in a private vehicle last night but did not return. The vehicle was found abandoned later. Security forces have launched a search operation for the 25-year-old soldier. The family members of the soldier suspect he has been kidnapped by terrorists and have put out a video statement, appealing for his release. "Please forgive us. Release my son, release my Javed. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said today that the state is being used as a corridor by "Rohingya infiltrators" from Bangladesh to either go to Delhi or Kashmir with the help of some brokers in Tripura. Nagaland Now Lumpy Skin Disease Positive State, 900 Cattle Found Infected

Nagaland has been declared a Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) positive state as more than 900 cattle were found afflicted with the infectious ailment in eight of the 16 districts, an official notification said on Thursday. The government of the northeastern state has decided to take all preventive measures including vaccination and isolation to save the animals, most of which are 'thuto' cattle which is indigenous to Nagaland. In light of the positive cases detected, Nagaland has been declared as an LSD positive state, said the government notification issued by Vikeyie Kenya, the Commissioner & Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department. "This declaration is made in accordance with The Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009," he said. The unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir, on a steady rise, stands at a staggering 18.3 per cent, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed Rajya Sabha today. The national average, interestingly, stands at around eight per cent now. The estimates for the unemployment rate specifically among the educated are not available for the period between April and June 2021. "However, according to a survey conducted between July 2020 and June 2021, the estimate of the unemployment rate among the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the age group of 15-29 years was 18.3 per cent," the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, told the Upper House. Amid tight security, the 22nd batch of 3,898 pilgrims left the base camp for the Amarnath Yatra here on Monday for the twin base camps of the cave shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas, officials said. More than 3.25 lakh pilgrims have so far paid obeisance at the cave shrine located at a height of 3,888 metres since the commencement of the annual pilgrimage from the twin tracks of Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal districts on July 1. 2 More Amarnath Pilgrims Die In Jammu And Kashmir, Deaths Count Rises To 36

Two more Amarnath pilgrims have died, taking the death toll during this year's pilgrimage in the south Kashmir Himalayas to 36, officials said on Saturday. The two pilgrims belonged to Rajasthan. They have been identified as Phateh Lal Manaria (died at the holy cave) and Mangi Lal (died at the Baltal base camp). They were aged 60, the officials said. While Manaria died of cardiac arrest, the cause of Lal's death was being ascertained, they added. These two deaths have taken the toll during the yatra so far this year to 36. Cardiac arrest triggered by low oxygen concentration at high altitudes is one of the most common causes of fatalities among Amarnath pilgrims and security forces posted there. Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta wrote to Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Friday flagging a "serious security lapse" after Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik , serving life term in Tihar jail, was brought to the Supreme Court for attending a case proceeding. "It is my firm view that this is serious security lapse. A person with terrorist and secessionist background like Yasin Malik who is not only a convict in terror funding case but has known connections with terror organisations in Pakistan could have escaped, could have been forcibly taken away or could have been killed," Mr Mehta wrote. "Not Till Sept 4": What Centre Told High Court On New Rules For Fake News

The Centre today informed the Bombay High Court that it won't notify till September 4 the 'Fact Check Unit' (FCU) under the recently amended Information Technology (IT) Rules to flag fake content on social media against the government. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought a division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Neela Gokhale to adjourn the earlier dates set by the court for the Centre to put forth its arguments justifying the new IT Rules. The bench has been hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the amended IT Rules. Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, the Editors Guild of India and the Association of Indian Magazines have filed petitions in the high court against the Rules, terming them arbitrary and unconstitutional and claiming that they would have a chilling effect on the fundamental rights of citizens.
