The month's average maximum temperature was 21.1 degrees Celsius, a notch above the long-period average of 20.1 degrees Celsius, marking it as Delhi's warmest January since 2019. Meteorologists attributed the warmer-than-usual January to the absence of strong western disturbances, which typically bring rain, lowering the temperature. Many parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir were also enveloped with dense fog, as per  the In...

1962 Indo-Sino War, Arunachal Pradesh: What China's DeepSeek AI Says

Image
Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup DeepSeek claims to have developed an AI assistant with performance comparable to leading Western models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini but at a fraction of the cost. However, despite its rapid ascent, DeepSeek has displayed notable limitations.  Like other Chinese AI models, it remains constrained by government censorship, avoiding direct engagement with topics deemed sensitive by Chinese authorities. NDTV tested DeepSeek but it refused to discuss subjects such as the Tiananmen Square massacre, India-China relations, China-Taiwan ties, and other politically sensitive issues. DeepSeek's Censorship In Action: Tiananmen Square Massacre DeepSeek completely avoids discussions about the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989. When NDTV attempted to reference "Tank Man" - the unidentified protester who famously stood in front of a column of Chinese tanks at Tiananmen Square-  the chatbot initially generated an answer...

Key Stampedes At Temples, Religious Gatherings In India Over The Years

The religious congregation at the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh turned into a nightmare for many early Wednesday as multiple casualties reportedly took place when crores of pilgrims jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya However, this tragic event is not unique, as stampedes resulting in numerous casualties have occurred at temples and other religious events in India over the years. Some of the largest casualties caused by stampedes at religious congregations over the recent years include the deadly stampede that occurred last year on July 2 during a 'satsang' by self-styled godman, Bhole Baba, in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, which claimed 121 lives, most of whom were women. Similarly, more than 340 devotees were killed at Maharashtra's Mandhardevi temple in 2005 and at least 250 were killed at Rajasthan's Chamunda Devi temple in 2008. Another stampede at a religious gathering at Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh caused the loss of live...

On December 24 last year, five soldiers were killed and eight injured in a road accident in Poonch district when an Army vehicle skidded off the road and dropped into a deep gorge. The Army and the security forces have increased vigil along the Line of Control and the hinterland after terrorists carried out some terrorist attacks in the last quarter of 2024. On October 20, 2024, two terrorists entered the worker's camp in Gagangir area of Ganderbal district. Seven civilians, including six non-local workers of an infrastructure company and a local doctor were killed in th...

Antidote To Toxin Causing 'Mystery Illness' In J&K 'Working Well': Experts

Amid the rising cases of the 'mystery illness' in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri that has claimed at least 17 lives, experts said that an organophosphorus toxin is causing the disease. According to sources, an antidote to counteract organophosphorus poisoning has been administered and it has worked well for patients who are admitted to hospital. “We have used atropine antidote and it's worked well. After the exact nature of the toxin was determined we gave atropine to patients” said a senior official. While experts have been maintaining that it is a case of neurotoxins after ruling out communicable disease or outbreaks of viruses or bacteria behind deaths in Badhaal village, determining the exact nature of toxins had become a challenge and deepened the mystery. On Sunday, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India finally conveyed to the Jammu and Kashmir health department that organophosphorus had been found and it was the reason behind deaths. “Now it's a matter...

For the first time in 35 years, the national tricolour was unfurled at Tral in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday as patriotic songs marked the celebration of 76th Republic Day. Once a bastion of terrorists and separatists, Tral town reverberated with patriotic songs and chants of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' as PDP MLA Rafiq Naik joined nearly 1,000 participants in the Republic Day function. The residents of the south Kashmir town said it was perhaps for the first time that the national flag was hoisted on Republic Day at the Tral Chowk. The flag was jointly unfurled by an elderly, a youth and a child, symbolising the unity of generations and their shared commitment to the nation. "This occasion marks a significant transformation for Tral, a place known for unrest, as it embraces peace, progress and national integration," a senior security force officer, who was present at the event, said. It was held in the 1930s-era Irwin Amphitheatre after the country got its first president. Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia, was the chief guest at India's first Republic Day celebrations in 1950. And 75 years later, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will be the chief guest at this year's ceremonial parade which will also see the participation of a marching contingent and a band contingent from that country. Ten opposition MPs have been suspended - including the Trinamool's Kalyan Banerjee, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, and A Raja of the DMK have been suspended for the day from the joint parliamentary committee studying proposed changes to the law governing Waqf boards. The suspensions followed ruckus in the JPC hearing Friday. The day's meeting began on a stormy note; opposition MPs shouted down proceedings, saying they were not being given enough time to study the changes suggested to the Waqf laws. This was before the JPC was to hear from Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmir's religious head. But that was delayed after opposition MPs accused others on the committee - specifically those from the ruling BJP - of rushing the bill through in time for next month's Delhi election. The heated arguments that followed forced brief adjournment, and the delegation led by the Mirwaiz appeared after the committee reconvened. But the peace didn't last long. Mr Banerjee and the Cong...

India Faces Threat From Within, Not Outside: Farooq Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said that India does not face a threat from the outside but from within. He emphasised the importance of unity and countering divisive narratives to secure the nation's future. "The country demands sacrifice even today to save itself. India does not face a threat from outside but from within. People inside the country can destroy it, not those from outside. To make the nation strong, we must make ourselves, our brothers, and our sisters strong", Dr Abdullah said while speaking at a function at the National Conference headquarters here. Dr Abdullah criticised divisive propaganda, particularly the narrative that Hindus are under threat. "There are 80 per cent Hindus in this country, so where is the threat? This narrative is meant to create fear among people. It is everyone's duty to break this falsehood," he said. Reflecting on historical narratives, he recalled misinformation d...

Opinion: Mahakumbh Is The Story Of The Resilience Of Hinduism

The sheer diversity of Hinduism and its inherent contradictions may appear baffling to an outsider. It doesn't tick any of the boxes that would define a religion if we apply the Western definition of religion to Hinduism. There is no single holy book, no single god, no concept of blasphemy or a centralised church or ulema to decide what is an essential practice of the religion and what is not. Hinduism is a kaleidoscope of colourful traditions, rituals, and deities, each one unique and vibrant. It is baffling to see a religion can remain coherent with so many practices and beliefs coexisting and intertwining. It is a collection of vibrant colours and intricate symbols, with temples adorned with intricate carvings and statues of various deities. The diversity is palpable, with devotees from different regions and backgrounds coming together to worship. How can a religion exist in such organised chaos? Hinduism is the third-largest religion in the world, but it is highly local to th...

In UGC Guidelines Row, Pinarayi Vijayan Responds To MK Stalin's Call

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has joined his Tamil Nadu counterpart, MK Stalin , in criticising provisions in a draft of the new University Grants Commission regulations . Mr Vijayan presented a resolution in the Kerala Assembly Tuesday demanding withdrawal of the guidelines. On Monday Mr Stalin said certain sections were "in conflict with the state's educational system and policies" and said these challenge the integrity, autonomy, and development of state-run universities. He urged Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to scrap those rules. The red-flagged sections also included a clause about the selection and appointment of Vice Chancellors of state-run universities, a contentious subject in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In each state the government is in a long-running battle with their respective Governors over the passage of a bill to limit influence of the latter - as the de facto Chancellor - on the process. The clause in question allows the Governor ...

Opinion: Israel-Hamas Ceasefire: Will Actions Match Words?

After nearly 480 days of intense fighting and bombardment, resulting in the deaths of over 46,000 Palestinian civilians in Gaza, a ceasefire deal has finally been reached. Though long in the making, previous efforts repeatedly fell short of achieving finality. This agreement, however, remains fragile, with no guarantees that it will be implemented fully in both letter and spirit. The trigger for the Gaza conflict, as well as the related hostilities in Lebanon, was the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack carried out by Hamas near the Israel-Gaza border. This heinous act of brutality sought to refocus international attention on the Palestinian issue, which Hamas perceived as sidelined by various international agreements, including the Abraham Accords. Wrong On Both Sides Much like Anwar Sadat's surprise cross-Suez attack that initiated the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, Hamas' actions involved the mass killing of innocents and the taking of hostages. These acts provoked a massi...

A diamond firm in Surat has crafted a stunning and striking carving of Donald Trump, using a 4.5 carat laboratory-grown diamond, to present it to the US President who took oath for a historic second term on Monday. The firm had earlier created a 7.5 carat eco-friendly laboratory-grown diamond that was presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jill Biden, wife of former US President Joe Biden, in 2023. The carving, created by Greenlab Diamonds over a period of three months, is estimated to be worth around Rs 8,50,000.  "We took three months to prepare this diamond, which includes growing, cutting and polishing. Our experts tried to make sure the carving is a replica of Mr Trump's face. This is an important symbol for ties between India and the US. We want to tell Mr Trump that the creativity and our efforts to produce lab-grown diamonds will continue," Smith Patel, one of the owners of the firm, said.  Mr Patel said the carving was prepared by five experienced jewel...

Analysis: India Opens Its Iconic Battlefields For Tourism

Be it the icy war fields of Galwan, Kargil and Siachen or the battles fought in the hot expanse of the Thar desert - tourists can now experience the war zones for themselves. On January 15, India's Ministry of Defence opened its historical as well as active battlefields and geopolitical zones for visitors as part of its new endeavour 'Bharat Ranbhoomi Darshan'.
