India Saw World's Highest Number Of Internet Shutdowns In 2022: Report

India imposed by far the highest number of internet shutdowns in the world in 2022, internet advocacy watchdog Access Now said on Tuesday, as the country topped the list for the fifth successive year. Out of 187 internet shutdowns globally recorded by Access Now, 84 took place in India, including 49 in Jammu and Kashmir, the New York-based digital rights advocacy group said in a report published on Tuesday. "Authorities disrupted internet access at least 49 times in Kashmir due to political instability and violence, including a string of 16 back-to-back orders for three-day-long curfew-style shutdowns in January and February 2022," the watchdog report added. Kashmir has long been a flashpoint between India and archrival Pakistan, which claim the region in full but rule only parts. In August 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped the autonomy of the Muslim-majority state of Jammu and Kashmir, splitting it into two federally...

Addressing the Congress plenary session in Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Gandhi said he wanted everyone who joined the Yatra to feel that they were coming home. He recalled the incident in 1977 when his family was preparing to leave their government accommodation. "There was a strange atmosphere in the house. I went to mummy and asked her what happened. Ma told me that we are leaving the house. "Till that time I used to think it was our house. So I asked my mother why we are leaving our house. Then my mom told me for the first time that it was not our house, but the government's and we have to leave it now," the Congress leader said. Rahul Gandhi said he asked his mother Sonia Gandhi where they would go next. "'Nahi maloom' (don't know) my mother said. I was take...

The Congress is considering a Pasighat-to-Porbandar yatra, party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Sunday after Rahul Gandhi called for taking the "tapasya" of the Bharat Jodo Yatra forward. Ramesh asserted that there was a lot of enthusiasm and energy among party workers for another yatra after the nearly 4,000-km Kanyakumari-to-Kashmir journey that was undertaken by Gandhi and scores of Congress persons from September last year to January this year. Ramesh told PTI that an east-to-west yatra, probably from Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh to Porbandar in Gujarat, was being considered but its format could be a bit different from the Bharat Jodo Yatra. "There is a lot of enthusiasm and energy. I also think personally it is needed but the format of the east-to-west yatra may turn out to be different from the format of the south-to-north Bharat Jodo Yatra," Ramesh said. It may not have such an elaborate infrastructure that was mobilised for the Bharat Jodo Yatr...

As India-Pak Ceasefire Enters Third Year, Here's How Lives Have Changed

The ceasefire between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir completed two years this week, marking a rare period of peace between the two countries. While the relationship between India and Pakistan is going through a deep freeze, both sides have ensured that the ceasefire is strictly maintained, bringing a huge relief to people living on both sides of the de facto border who previously endured frequent firing and the destruction of homes. Over the last two years, there have been no casualties reported on either side in cross-border firing in Jammu and Kashmir. The army's robust counter-infiltration mechanism has also dramatically brought down the number of attempts of infiltration along the LoC. This marks a huge turnaround in the situation along the borders. In 2020, there were 5,000 ceasefire violations or cross-border firing incidents that caused deaths and the destruction of homes. However, over the last two years, there have been almost ze...

Former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Amarjit Singh Dulat on Friday said while the Modi government's "muscular policy" is working and "militancy was down", the "idea of India" in Kashmir was being lost and that there is need for a "healing touch."  Speaking at a discussion about his book 'A Life in the Shadows', Mr Dulat also said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's unfurling of the national flag at Srinagar's Lal Chowk helped "the idea of India" being "promoted in Kashmir". "Government's muscular policy is working, militancy is down... what is being lost in Kashmir is the idea of India," Mr Dulat, who headed the Kashmir group in Intelligence Bureau in the 1990s, said at a function held here at the 100-year-old Oxford Bookstore. Tax Resistance: A Rallying Cry In Jammu And Kashmir

Tax resistance has become a rallying cry for all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir. Even the ruling BJP has distanced itself from the Union Territory administration's decision to levy property taxes in the former state.  After the controversial land eviction drive, which has dispossessed thousands of people from the state land they had cultivated and inhabited for generations, the government decision to impose property taxes from April has caused outrage. Jammu and Kashmir has been under direct central rule for nearly five years, and the frequent decisions taken by Lieutenant Governor's administration has irked political parties and caused fears among people.  As thousands gathered to listen Democratic Azad Party (DAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad at Larno in Anantnag district, the former chief minister took a dig at the administration for imposing property taxes.  "If they had control on air, they would have levied tax on it as well. Thank God it's not in their con...

Speaking to reporters in Anantnag district of south Kashmir, Mr Azad said the economic situation in J&K over the last 35 years has become "bad" because of militancy. "Our unemployment, inflation has increased manifold. Our tourism, handicraft, horticulture, has suffered a great deal and the people of J-K, including businessmen, transporters, shopkeepers, have suffered losses. "There is no person from Lakhanpur to Tangdhar who has not suffered losses. So, in such a situation, when we are taking land from them, increasing electricity charges, we are not in a position to pay property tax," he said. The former J...

"Hindus Became Poor Under BJP Rule": Mehbooba Mufti

People's Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the BJP and alleged that the party does not want to build a nation but only intends to make India a "BJP Rashtra", adding that 26 crore people who were lifted above the poverty line during the UPA regime have been pushed back in the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category. That battle was settled in Mr Shinde's favour by the Election Commission on Friday -- a decision that Mr Thackeray plans to challenge in the Supreme Court. "Yes...

The plenary session in Chhattisgarh's Nava Raipur will start from February 24 and is expected to be attended by around 15,000 delegates. Congress general secretary organisation KC Venugopal said the party's steering committee would meet on the first day of the session and decide whether elections would be held for the party's top decision-making body -- the Congress Working Committee (CWC), a demand made by some from within the organisation. The Congress knows its role in bringing together various opposition parties for forging an alliance ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to take on the BJP and oust it from power, he said. "The Congress has already taken the initiative and has been in touch with various political partie...
